How compressing to 1024 KB works
A 1MB ceiling is the most common limit on the modern web: WordPress media defaults, job boards, insurance claim uploads and most webmail attachments all sit around it. For nearly every photograph, 1MB is enough to keep the original resolution and near-original quality, so this is compression you can apply without thinking twice.
The tool encodes your image at progressively tuned JPEG quality levels until it lands just under 1,024KB, keeping the largest, cleanest version that fits. Downscaling only kicks in for enormous panoramas or medium-format files where quality alone cannot get there.
As with every CompressGo tool, the work happens in your browser. Insurance photos, claim evidence, ID scans and family pictures are processed locally and never uploaded, so there is no privacy trade-off for the convenience.
Why 1024 KB specifically?
1MB is the default attachment and media-upload limit across WordPress, webmail, job boards and insurance claim portals — it is the point where files stop being 'too big' almost everywhere.
What to expect from your file
| Source image | Typical original size | Result at 1024 KB |
|---|---|---|
| DSLR JPG, 6000×4000 | 11 MB | 1 MB at full resolution |
| Phone photo, 4032×3024 | 4.2 MB | 1 MB at full resolution |
| Scanned A4 page, 300 DPI | 6.8 MB | 1 MB, text crisp |
Tips for the best result
- 1MB rarely forces a resize, so upload the full-resolution original rather than a pre-shrunk copy.
- If you are optimising for a website rather than a form, aim lower — 150–300KB loads noticeably faster.
- Multi-photo claims compress best one at a time so each file gets the full budget.
- Keep the untouched original on your device; compression is lossy and cannot be undone.
When people need this size
- Photos for an insurance or warranty claim
- Media uploads to WordPress or another CMS
- CV portrait or portfolio images for a job board
- Email attachments blocked by a 1MB gateway limit
