Image Compression Tips

Choose the Right Format

JPG is best for photos. PNG is best for images with transparency or text. WebP offers good compression for both.

Quality vs. Size

Lower quality settings yield smaller files but may introduce artifacts. Find the sweet spot for your needs.

Benefits

  • Faster website loading
  • Lower bandwidth usage
  • Reduced storage requirements
  • Improved user experience

Why an offline, in-browser image compressor?

Most image compressors upload your file to a server, run a CLI like mozjpeg or pngquant, and send the result back. That is convenient, but it also means your selfies, screenshots, product mockups and personal IDs sit on a stranger's machine. Many free services keep those uploads to train machine-learning models or to populate stock libraries.

This page does the entire compression locally. We decode your image with the browser, draw it onto a canvas at the dimensions you keep, and ask the browser to re-encode it at the quality level you choose. Optionally we convert formats (PNG to WebP is often a 70%+ win) — still all without a single byte of your image leaving the tab.

How to pick quality

  • 90–100 — visually identical to original. Use for portfolio photos and print.
  • 75–85 — the sweet spot for the web. Massive savings, no visible loss at normal viewing distance.
  • 50–70 — aggressive. Great for thumbnails and tiny mobile previews.
  • Below 50 — only for placeholder use; expect visible artefacts.

Format tips that actually move the needle

  • Convert big PNG photos to JPG or WebP — often 5–10× smaller.
  • Keep PNG for screenshots with text and any image needing transparency.
  • WebP is now safe everywhere (every modern browser, iOS 14+, Android 5+).
  • AVIF is even smaller again but encoding can be slow on older devices.

Privacy bonus: metadata is removed

Re-encoding through canvas naturally drops EXIF data. That means GPS coordinates, camera serial numbers, software version and timestamps are all stripped from the output. If you ever shared a photo to social media and worried about leaking your home location, this is the simplest fix.
